Record High Number of UK Businesses

The number of businesses in the UK has hit a record high with 5.5 million businesses currently operating in the UK according to official statistics released by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The report estimates that at the start of 2016 the UK had a million more small businesses, 4000 more medium sized businesses and 900 more large businesses, compared to 2010, which works out as an increase of 23 per cent.

Business and Energy secretary Greg Clark was full of praise saying ‘Britain’s businesses are the heroes of our economic revival and it is great to see the number of businesses rise by over a million since 2010.’

There is no doubt that the UK economy is defying the odds; and as well as being robust enough to keep growing in uncertain times, small and medium sized enterprises account for nearly 100 per cent of businesses in every main business sector.
